How would you describe therapy with you?
I believe that there are reasons behind our presenting emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, whether it is due to past trauma, insecure attachment, cultural norms, or the lack of coping and communication skills. Our old patterns and experiences sometimes keep us stuck in a place that prevent us from experiencing satisfying relationships with ourselves and with others. I also believe that we each have the strengths and the tools that we can build upon, to help us get “unstuck” and obtain satisfaction with ourselves and our relationships.
My natural desire to understand the circumstances and perspectives of each individual provides me with the foundation to create a safe, non-judgemental environment for clients in the therapy room. I support clients from a collaborative, strengths-based approach and work mindfully in the present to find both the reasons behind my clients’ dissatisfactions and their strengths to overcome negative or unhelpful patterns.
My Passions and Specialties:
My specialties include working with individuals and couples on issues of adjustment, relational conflict and trauma, which commonly manifest as depression, anxiety, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress, attention-deficit hyperactivity and oppositional behaviors. I also specialize in working with minority ethnic groups, especially around issues of immigration, acculturation and racial-discrimination. I also enjoy working with cross cultural couples and premarital couples in helping set their relationships up for long-term success.
I’m passionate about working with parents on their parenting skills and on managing their own stress/self-care. I also work with individuals who experienced difficulties in their exposure to the foster care system, as well as those who have experienced different types of trauma - to include sexual, emotional and physical abuse.
In the sessions, I conceptualize cases from attachment and postmodern theories, including narrative and solution-focused therapy. I often utilize interventions from TF-CBT, CBT and mindfulness, while using play, art, and games with children and families.
My Personal Journey:
I resided in Japan for 9 years during my childhood, so I am fluent in Japanese and have a strong desire and passion for working with the Japanese and other Asian-American/immigrant population in the community.
